C-section after Home Labour; Becky’s Birth

written by |

Becky’s birth did not follow her original “plan”. Becky had a C-section after a home labour, and had hoped for a home birth. Becky said she remained calm throughout and describes her birth as an “amazing experience”. Love reading positive birth stories? You’re in the right place…

Hi Beth, just wanted to tell you how amazing your course and Instagram posts/ stories and responses to messages have been throughout my pregnancy.

This is my first pregnancy and whilst my sister and friends all have children I don’t think anything can prepare you for labour apart from the knowledge and experience your course gives.

My birth plan

Originally, I had planned a home birth as after doing your course I wanted to be at home in my own environment with a birthing pool. However, I was 12 days over at this point and booked to be induced on the morning of Friday 27th January. I had a sweep on the Thursday and was starting to have contractions at 3pm that same day. However, as the contractions stopped by 8pm I thought I would still need to be induced and went to bed. At 1.30am I was getting the pains again. I thought I would just stay in bed as I had had the same type of pains over the past 12 days….

Contractions getting stronger

The contractions started to get stronger by 3.45am. I had moved to the living room to bounce on my birthing ball and to time the contractions. By 4am I had woke my husband to get him to put the Tens machine onto me as the contractions were starting to become a lot more intense. By 6am my contractions were every 2 to 3 minutes lasting around 30 to 45 seconds. I called the maternity triage at my local hospital and they advised me to start putting up the pool. By 7am my waters had broken as I was about to get into the pool. The community midwives had arrived by 8.30am. I had 2 community midwives and a student nurse with me the whole time and they truly were amazing.

I used all the breathing techniques practiced from the course and with the pool and gas and air, I was fully dilated by 7.30pm…

A change in the plan; C-section after Home Labour

I was pushing for 2 hours on land without any gas and air. But – the baby was stuck in a sideways position and was not able to make her way out. As her heart rate dropped the decision was made to call an ambulance. I was taken to hospital for an emergency c-section. I still remained completely calm and excited to finally meet my baby girl. Annabel was born at 11pm on Friday 27th January weighing 7lb 1oz.

The whole labour was an amazing experience and whilst it didn’t go completely to plan it was still so positive. I have never felt as in control as I did that day. I’m so happy I was able to labour at home and would definitely recommend other mums to be the opportunity to do so. I felt completely relaxed and had amazing support from the wonderful midwives the whole way through. My family and the midwives couldn’t believe how well I did as this was my first baby. I put it down to your course, the breathing techniques and knowing when to stay calm.
