Combs in labour? Say what?

written by |

You have heard the rumours about using combs in labour for pain relief. How on earth could this be true?

Combs in labour and The Pain Gate Theory?

There’s a theory called The Pain Gate Theory that suggests that the brain can’t focus on more than one sensation at the same time. So, when the teeth of the comb are being pressed into the palm of the hand the brain focuses on the sensation that is being applied to the skin. This acts as a distraction to the strength of contractions. There are other techniques that use the pain gate theory such as using a TENS for labour. With a TENS machine, the electric impulses stimulate the skin on your back the same way as the teeth on the comb stimulate the skin on your palm. Both send messages to your brain distracting the pain from contractions.

Combs in labour and acupressure point?

The Laogong accupressure point is located where the tip of your middle finger touches the palm when you make a fist. When you squeeze the teeth of the comb into your palm, it puts pressure on this point. This point helps to reduce inflammation and ease anxiety.

When do I use a comb for labour?

As soon as you start to feel contractions! You can use this technique as soon as you start to feel contractions and right up to you having your baby. It is a good technique for times where you haven’t got access to other coping strategy methods. For example, in the car on the way to your place of birth.
