Rewriting birth anxiety; Laura’s Birth

written by |

Love reading positive birth stories, you’re in the right place – especially if you are feeling anxiety about giving birth. This positive birth story is with first time mum Laura and the arrival of her baby boy. Laura had a lot of anxiety surrounding giving birth, and was able to hugely reduce this by getting informed about birth. Laura says after giving birth she felt so proud and empowered.

I’ve wanted to send this message for ages but time just runs away when you have a baby!

Birth anxiety

I just wanted to say thank you for the Bump to Baby Chapter course.

I’ve always been absolutely terrified about having a baby. I’m just so nervous and anxious in clinical settings and fearing the unknown as to how well I’d be able to handle the pain.

It was to the point that when I told my mum I think she was so surprised. For these reasons, I don’t think she thought I’d ever have children.

After finishing the course I did still feel nervous about the labour, but my mind was so much more at ease. I felt so informed about the whole process and possible ways my baby might make an appearance. I think this is honestly what got me through the birth. It lasted 10 hours in total (I think the raspberry leaf tea and dates definitely helped with all of this). I really felt in control every step of the way and it was such a positive experience.

Giving birth

I think the labour was quite straight forward in that it was fairly quick for a first time mum. My waters broke at 4.30am and the contractions started almost immediately. I knew I wanted to try and stay at home as long as I could manage, so I had a shower and used the birthing ball whilst practicing the breathing techniques. We arrived at the hospital at 8am and I was 6cm!!! I couldn’t believe it. I was convinced they’d be sending me home again!!

In terms of pain relief, I didn’t have any (I did ask for an epidural, but as I moved rooms to have it I started feeling a lot of pressure so when I was examined I was 9cm so I decided against it!! I didn’t need any interventions either and I honestly knew what was happening at each point of the birth and I really think this is what kept me going and helped me get through it.

I can’t thank you enough. Even though it was painful and I remember saying ‘I’m never doing that again’. I really do look back on the day so positively!”

Thank you you so much I never ever thought I’d be able to do it. I feel so empowered and proud of myself now and I just can’t believe I’ve got my perfect baby boy.
