Sian’s Birth Story

Positive birth story. Sorry for the length!

Baby Nia arrived safely on 6th September (the day before her due date). I was lucky and got the birth I wanted and I honestly think it was down to this course because it helped me to stay calm and feel in control throughout. Thanks Beth and BTBC!

After some slight cramps and back ache during the day on the 5th, my waters broke at 8:30pm (with an audible pop!) but contractions hadn’t started. We rang the assessment line and were told to give it a couple of hours and then go in if there had been no changes.
In the hour long car journey, the tightenings began but with breathing through them they felt manageable and so during the assessment they confirmed my waters had broken, baby was doing well, and suggested I return home for the early stages.
But as the paperwork was being completed the tightenings got more regular and intense and so I was admitted at 1am.
After that everything happened pretty quickly. So quickly that my husband didn’t get a chance to get back to the car and collect the hospital bag…

The midwife filled the pool, contractions ramped up and I had some gas and air which combined with the pool and breathing was enough to get me through. My husband helped to keep me calm, reminding me to relax and breathe through contractions and got our playlist on. I highly recommend watching the videos with your birth partner as he felt confident he knew what was happening and could do the thinking for me. Baby Nia arrived safely in the water at 06:55.
