I’m Pregnant! Now what?

written by |

Firstly, massive congratulations!! How very exciting.

You’ve peed on that stick, you’ve got those two lines – now what?

Who do I contact now I am pregnant?

This is usually your local midwife at your GP surgery. Give your GP surgery a call and let them know. They will either book you a first GP appointment, or book you in for your first appointment with your midwife – or both if required. They may ask you to pop in to fill out a form beforehand for your midwife.

When will my first midwife appointment be?

Your first midwife appointment should take place before you are 10 weeks pregnant, generally around week 8. It will take place at your house, your GP surgery, or sometimes at your local hospital. You can read about this appointment here on the NHS website.

What if I am taking any medication?

If you are taking any medication you will definitely need to see your GP to check it is safe for pregnancy. You should not stop taking any regular medication until you have spoken to your GP.

Should I take any prenatals?

You’ll get most of the vitamins and minerals you need during pregnancy by eating a healthy and balanced diet. But – when you’re pregnant it is important to take a folic acid supplement. Taking a Vitamin D supplement is important. The easiest way to get the recommended amount of folic acid and Vitamin D is by taking a prenatal such as these from Pregnacare.

Should I do birth prep and when should I start?

I’m a midwife, mum of 4 and qualified hypnobirthing practitioner. My answer is going to be a big yes – I believe birth prep is one of the best things you can do during pregnancy. A question we here time and time again, when should I start hypnobirthing? Read my answer on the blog – it might surprise you!
