First time mum birth story; Faye

Love reading positive birth stories? You’re in the right place… First time mum birth story from Birth Chapter grad Faye who gave birth to her baby boy in the water and describes her birth as “perfection”.

I took the Bump to Baby Chapter course in preparation for my birth as a first-time-mum I did not know what to expect and wanted to go into labour with as much knowledge as possible. I found the course so informative and it left me feeling excited and ready for childbirth. I found that reading positive birth stories and watching positive births really helped with my mindset.

My birth story…

Waters breaking

Wednesday the 3th Jan I was suffering with what I thought were early labour pains so I carried on life as normal as possible that day breathing through the pain when needed. That evening things got a bit more intense and I felt a lot of pressure down below and had some spotting. We drove to the hospital early the next morning and my waters broke Hollywood style in the car. After that the early labour pains settled. I was examined only 2cm and baby was back to back.

Induction booked

An induction was booked for the following morning Jan 5th and sent home. I was emotional at this point as an induction was not something I’d planned on. But I remembered all I’d learned from the Bump to Baby Chapter and stayed calm. That day early contraction pain started again but very sporadic. I spent the day in different positions all fours rocking and walking. At this point I watched my wedding video and listened to songs that made me emotional to get my oxytocin levels up so that I might go into labour naturally. I didn’t give up hope but also accepted that I’d have an induction the next morning as I felt it was the safest option for me and baby.

Contractions starting

That evening I woke with very strong pain. I used my tens machine and breathing techniques I laboured in the bedroom for around 1 hour. When things became too intense I woke my husband and we drove to the hospital which was 40 minutes away. I used my tens machine and hypnobirthing breathing techniques to get through it.

Using the birth pool

Once I arrived I was examined 5cm dilated and was given gas and air I remained stood up leaning on the bed as I remembered the abbreviation UFO Upright Forward Open. I was then taken to the water birth pool which was a godsend. The water really acted as a pain relief along with gas and air. Not too long after getting into the pool I felt a strong sensation to push and no longer needed gas and air my contractions were now acting to push baby out and my instincts were to work with my body.

Hello baby

After 20 minutes of pushing and having the opportunity to touch my baby’s head as he was crowing. This gave me more motivation. I gave birth in the pool to our gorgeous little boy Archie 3 hours later with no intervention and a very tiny tear. It was perfection.
